Cosworth's first premises at Shaftesbury Mews, London

Wanting an engine to fit his radical, new Lotus design, Colin Chapman contacted Mike Costin and Keith Duckworth (Cos-Worth) to come up with something revolutionary. Duckworth worked 18 hour days for 9 months, losing 40lbs in weight during the engineering process.

At the third race of the 1967 season, Chapman's Lotus 49, sporting a DFV bolted to the cockpit and forming the car's rear chassis, made its debut at the 1967 Dutch Grand Prix. Graham Hill put his car on pole position by half a second, but it was team-mate Jim Clark who stormed home to win.

The legendary DFV had been born.

In 1969 and 1973 every World Championship race was won by Cosworth DFV-powered cars, with the engine taking a total of 155 wins from 262 races between 1967 and 1985.

Alboreto Tyrrell Cosworth DFV Last Win

The last victory for a DFV powered car was in 1983 when Michele Alboreto drove the Tyrrell 011 to win the 1983 USA East Grand Prix at Detroit. It was also the final win for Tyrrell.
